Right after Christmas I bought a large, lovely volume of poetry by Czeslaw Milosz. I've been picking it up about once a week since then to read a few poems, when the mood strikes me.
The other night I was reading it before bed. When I got sleepy, I sat it on the windowsill next to my bed and there it sat for the next few days.
Yesterday, it rained all day. It rained HARD. The wind was blowing causing it to rain sideways at times.
Last night, I picked up my book to read and the entire bottom half of the book was soaked. My window was leaking.
The book is ruined.
And for some reason I cried. I didn't sob uncontrollably but tears came to my eyes.
Was I crying for my lost book? I doubt it. It's just everything ELSE that's going on, I'm sure.
But DAMN I loved that book!
Posted by De at March 3, 2005 12:49 PMLosing a book like that is way more than just losing some reading material. A book like that has helped you through tough spots, entertained, educated, spent time with you when you were lonely, comforted...it's not just a book at that point. It's a friend.
There's some good news though - the book isn't necessarily ruined. I fell asleep in the tub once while reading my treasured "The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe", which I'd had for about two decades at that point. It was a sodden mess. I called my favorite librarian and asked what I could do to save it. She didn't have a clue, but she found somebody who did.
Put it on a cookie tray in the oven standing up on its spine. Put the oven on its lowest setting. Put a pan of water on the second oven tray underneath the book. Keep the oven on for an hour or so then turn it off and crack open the oven door. Keep the oven off for an hour then close the door and turn it back on to the lowest setting.
Cycle that on with door closed, open with door open, one hour each method until the book is uniformly very slightly damp. Then take it out and very carefully turn through the book page by page frontwards then backwards until it is dry.
There's still a little bit of water wrinkling on my Narnia book but overall I was exstatic with the results. Besides - a little wrinkling just adds character. ;-)
