I'm Not Feelin It

Do you have ANY idea just how much of a crazed football fan I am was?
For some reason I'm just not excited this year. I haven't watched ONE SINGLE GAME.
Is it me? or is it the NFL? Has free agency finally killed football?

Did the season start already?

Exactly.

Have you moved away from the city your favorite team plays in? Is your favorite team going to be lousy this year and so it's harder to get excited during the pre-season?

Free agency has been around for a while - if you're no longer a football fan this year, there must be another reason.

Besides, once the season gets started and all those Sudnay games start rolling by, I predict you'll return to the fold.

"Every time I think I'm out - they PULL me back in!"

My interest level in the NFL started waning a long time ago. It's well on its way to becoming as boring as pro basketball.

Luckily for me, there's college football. My Sooners appear to be loaded for bear again this year, if we can just avoid another one of those nasty late-season let-downs...

Ted, the answers to your questions will become apparently when I simply say that I'm a Cowboys fan.
I have been since I was 8 years old.

It's heartbreaking to see what's happening and to watch them fail year after year.
I won't turn my back on them but it's hard to get excited when I know the season's going to suck.

As far as free-agency goes, I know it's been around a while but it's also taken a while for it to water down the teams. The talent is spread around so thin now that you just don't have those power-house units like in the olden days.

You're right, though. I'm sure as the weather gets cooler and football season gets into full-swing, it'll "pull me back in".

Mike, do NOT get me started on basketball *hurl*.
I too enjoy college football...I'm a Texan after all.
Keeping up with the Aggies and the Horns is a full time job!

Heh heh... as an Eagles fan, it's hard for me not to gloat about your 'Boys misfortune... but I'll restrain myself in this case (does it count as restraint if you still mention your desire to gloat?).

Since I moved from Philly to NYC, my chief motivation as a sports fan has been finding ways to mock every little problem that crops up for all of the NY sports teams. It's petty and accomplishes very litte - but 'idle hands...' as the saying goes....

Good luck!

Is it called restraint when I say I'm going to beat your ass but I only punch you instead? LOL
I kid!!

Actually, picking on other sports teams is very cathartic and I'm surprised I haven't done more of it!

My opinion is the exact opposite. The game of football has surpassed all of the other sports. Baseball is too slow, basketball is too individual, tennis is tennis, golf is a sport to PLAY not watch, and hockey is only good live.

I was a fan growing up, but with the addition of fantasy football, real football has become THE sport.

Salut!

Oh, but I don't watch any preseason games, they are meaningless.

Posted by: Easycure at August 25, 2004 02:48 PM

I've been thinking of getting into fantasy football hoping it would jumpstart my football excitement.

Posted by: DeAnna at August 25, 2004 02:55 PM

It's funny you mention the fantasy football thing. I always avoided it in the past for two reasons: I didn't want to take the time to set lineups every week, and I didn't want to be one of those guys who's rooting for (to choose an apt example) the Eagles to beat the Cowboys, but for Emmitt to gain 150 yards.

Broke down and joined two leagues this year (one at work; one with friends). Early verdict: even if I lose every game, it's worth it for the trash-talking alone!! Good clean, American fun....

I'm a little late getting worked up about the NFL and fantasy football this year, too. Fantasy Football starts for me Friday night and once the bullets start flying for real, I'll be in it thick again.

Go Saints!

A long suffering Vikings fan here. We always do well in the pre-season and then manage to roll it down the mountain when it counts. So, I don't get all hot and bothered until the gauntlet gets thrown for real. But, yeah, I'm still goose-bumpily excited for it to start.

And college football starts this weekend!!!! Boo-yah!

First time commenter, but I've enjoyed your site a bunch.

Hi Jennifer! Welcome to the vast nothingness that is my blog.
My lovely boyfriend who is a Minnesotan shares your pain as a Vikings fan. :)

I was ALMOST a hardcore Vikings fan. I'd gotten hooked on watching them because they were doing so well. They were in the playoffs. They were poised to finally go back to the Superbowl. They were somewhere around the 20 yard line in the 4th quarter, down by two points on 4th down with seconds left on the clock. All they needed was a chip shot by the kicker who'd spent the season setting the new NFL record for most consecutive successful kicks at somewhere over 110. They snapped the ball. The right side of the line broke down, which was unfortunate since the ball was spotted on the left hash marks. The kicker had nowhere to send the ball but......wide. By two football widths.

I watched the following two seasons as Culpepper and Moss tore up the defenses and were raved about by the ESPN announcers. I watched them fail again in the playoffs those two years. I couldn't take it.

I now watch Formula 1. :)
